What is Lifestyle Design?

The Unstoppable Family at Lake Miramichi

Do you have a plan for retirement?

Why do we have to work all our life to start enjoying our life?  Shouldn’t we be enjoying our life while we are working?

For average people, it takes about 45 years to work a full time job, retire then start LIVING their life.   Doesn’t that sound backwards?

What if you could live a fulfilling life, travel around the world, give back to others less fortunate and do it all while you are in your prime.  Does it sound too good to be true?

That’s exactly the philosophy behind Lifestyle Design.

This is how the UNSTOPPABLE FAMILY is living every day, and we want to inspire you to do the same.

This is also the purpose of our blog.

Lifestyle Design has received a lot of attention lately, ever since Timothy Ferriss’ book The 4-Hour work Week: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich broke into public awareness in 2007.

Ferris didn’t invent the concept, but he is the one that gave it a name and a definition.   Since then, hundreds of other books, blogs, websites and other resources about lifestyle design have been launched.

Just how does Tim Ferriss define lifestyle design? In the introduction of his book, he introduces both lifestyle design and the group of people doing it (the New Rich):

The New Rich (NR) are those who abandon the deferred-life plan and create luxury lifestyles in the present using the currency of the New Rich: time and mobility. This is an art and a science we will refer to as Lifestyle Design (LD).

He poses the question  “Could there be an alternative to working hard your whole life and retiring at age 60”?

Life doesn’t have to be so damn hard. It really doesn’t. Most people, my past self included, have spent too much time convincing themselves that life has to be hard, a resignation to 9-to-5 drudgery in exchange for (sometimes) relaxing weekends and the occasional keep-it-short-or-get-fired vacation.

People don’t want to be millionaires — they want to experience what they believe only millions can buy. Ski chalets, butlers, and exotic travel often enter the picture. Perhaps rubbing cocoa butter on your belly in a hammock while you listen to waves rhythmically lapping against the deck of your thatched-roof bungalow? Sounds nice.

$1,000,000 in the bank isn’t the fantasy. The fantasy is the lifestyle of complete freedom it supposedly allows. The question is then, How can one achieve the millionaire lifestyle of complete freedom without first having $1,000,000?

Is Lifestyle Design for Everyone?

Why not?  (or Por Que No? as my wonderful husband Brian Swan would say)   anyone can take advantage of  lifestyle by design.

At its most basic level, lifestyle design is about bucking the status quo to become corporate drones, working 40-60 hours or more every week while living for the weekends and a few weeks of vacation every year.

Lifestyle design certainly doesn’t have to be as radical as we have made it.  Or as Ferris would say  “Outsourcing your life, playing currency arbitrage while traveling the world or creating automated cash-flow businesses”, unless you want it to be.

It’s about designing your life, and not letting society dictate it for you.

That’s what our blog stands for.

Through our world travels, adventures and experiences, we will show you how LIFESTYLE by DESIGN can dramatically change your life for the better.

Awesome blog post Rhonda. You and Brian truly show how, with a little focus, anyone can live their dreams NOW instead of hoping for “one day”.

Awesome post. The content mentioned in it reminds me of a quote I came across earlier:

“If you don’t design your own life plan, chances are you’ll fall into someone else’s plan. And guess what they have planned for you? Not much.”— Jim Rohn

I love how he opens peoples’ eyes and teaches them that you CAN live the million dollar lifestyle without the million dollars. Often people forget how easy this type of lifestyle and freedom can be, if only they just took a chance, stepped out of their comfort zone, and ignored what society teaches them!
