Our new activity is wakeboarding here in Bocas del Toro, Panama and I, Rhonda Swan, have challenged myself to jump the wake by April! It’s incredible that we get to live our lives like this, on the clear Carribbean sea on a sunny day, wakeboarding between all these little islands and makes us so glad that we chose to quit our corporate jobs to live this lifestyle.
I’m sure most of you know what wakeboarding is but basically you’re tugged along behind a speedboat and ride the surface of the water; it’s a bit like snowboarding or skateboarding but on water. Whereas with water skiing you have the two skis attached to your feet, with wakeboarding you ride on one wide board. We already surf all the time, that’s our main passion, and we love to snowboard too, so wakeboarding is perfect for us.
Wakeboarding is a cool and fun way to excercise and is great for keeping fit and healthy. You have to have quite strong arms and it definitely works your arms and leg muscles the most. It involves quite a lot of concentration to keep your balance and the key is to perform nimble gymnastic moves so you don’t crash into the water…which you will end up doing when you’re a beginner! It’s a lot of fun!
