33. I’ll turn a glorious 33 this weekend.

It’s going to be a great natal year–I can already feel it. Repeating numbers (born in ‘77) are good luck. Perhaps it will be good luck for you, too: in this post, I’m giving away a round-trip ticket anywhere in the world and more.

But back to that strange birthday gift…

Much to the chagrin of my momma-san, I’ve become quite difficult to buy presents for. Some friends even think I’m impossible to find presents for.

It’s not entirely true. I love handwritten letters, home-made brownies (like Fred Wilson), girlfriends dressed in next to nothing, and–most of all–when people do something nice.

In lieu of gifts this year, my birthday wish is to help high-need kids in public schools take field trips.

Can you imagine never having the chance to go to the aquarium or natural history museum? “Never” as in, literally, never in your life?

That’s unacceptable.

Since I am turning 33 this year, please help choose a field trip to support here with a tax-deductible $33 donation (or any other amount). Feel free to give from $10-$10,000 in the “Give to the most urgent project” field, whatever you can afford.

If we run out of field trips (which would be awesome), we’ll focus on reading projects. Literacy = the most fundamental path out of poverty.

Well, I was totally amused by this guy in the book so being in Bali, I wanted to go. I kept talking about it for the first month we were here and still didn’t go..and then SIGN #1….”Eat, Pray, Love
“ the movie was being filmed at Padan Padang Beach right by where we were staying on the Bukit Penninsula. Julia Roberts was there and Brad Pitt so the beach was always flocked with onlookers.

Then I met this girl on the airplane, while returning from a business trip from Mexico back to Bali, she had a surfboard and was travelling alone.  We started talking in Taipei Airport and found out that she too was from San Diego, a surfer girl and in seek of “The Medicine Man”  from the book!!!!  Sign #2, I am going to meet this guy.

After our Safari adventure we finally made it to Ketut Liyer’s home.  It was a simple Balanese home, were Katut and his whole family lived, chicken’s and all.

He spent over 30 minutes with me, reading my palm, legs, back and neck….It seems as though I am very lucky, will be rich and have 3 kids!!  Well, I am in for the first 2 but not so sure about the last (maybe he was including a few animals!!)  Nontheless it was a powerful experience sitting on the floor of this man’s home, while his son’s chicken’s and wife.  At the end, he did a traditional blessing ceremony with chimes and at the end blessed me with rice on my forehead and on the heart chakra.  (For all my Canadian Friends…check out his shirt!  He loves Canada apparently)

Surf Smack

Many people talk “smack” but how many actually qualify to offer such mental mind jarring dialogue?  Well, there is one person that I am gong to promote as a QUALIFIED SURF SMACK TALKER…what is his name you might ask?  No-one else but my husband…Mr. Swano!

Now I didn’t say he qualified for TALKING SMACK….because he does that on a daily basis…..but he does qualify for TALKING SURF SMACK!  Swano, as many would call him is a bonifide Surf Addict and very dedicated to his disease.  In fact…if he is not able to surf for more than 2-3 days the withdrawl symptoms start popping up.  Symptoms such as, agitation, light headed, dry mouth, annoying to name a few.

So with that being said, Mr. Swano is truly qualified to TALK SURF SMACK.  We started our journey around the world 20 months ago and set sail to surf the worlds best waves…and so far we have done pretty good.  From Sunset, to Hanalei Bay to Puerto Escondito, Playa Negra, Uluwatu, Bingins, Hideaway’s, Frigette’s and  Cloudbreak, Mr. Swano has earned his metals and a few scars along the way…and that’s a whole new conversation.

With all of this surf experience and life experience to go along with it, Swano decided to share a bit out of his head while surfing…(let me just say I warned you).

S what does a surfer think about while they are in the water…ready to drop into a death defying wave?  Well Swano decided to show everyone with “Swano’s Surf Smack”.

Call it what you will…July 9th, 2010 is a huge date in Fiji Surf history & for Surf history overall. For myself, something I will never forget…being the 1st boat to pull up to Fiji’s most famous wave, Cloudbreak, and surf without staying on Tavarua Resort or obtaining permission.

Below is from Surfline’s article…

Fiji’s government moved swiftly to sign into law its Surfing Decree, making it effective July 9, 2010. Now anyone with a surfboard and a boat can access Cloudbreak and Restaurants on Tavarua, or Swimming Pools on nearby Namotu — and any other surf spot that previously may have been restricted — no fees, no fuss, no argument.
Indeed, those trying to shoo encroachers off their would-be exclusive surf spots face harsh penalties: a fine of $10,000 for a company or $1,000 for an individual, plus a possible two years in jail. If anyone is concerned that a world-class break like Cloudbreak will soon see the same kind of rough justice that constitutes crowd control at Pipeline, hold your judgment. A close reading of the Decree reveals that acts of localism will be subject to the same penalties.

Hmmmmm, now that depends.  In fact, we just realized the UNSTOPPABLE FAMILY has everything but typical days.

For someone that is working a JOB, they may do similar things everyday…get up shower, have breaky then head to work…work for 8 hours then head home, eat dinner and sleep.

Now for the UNSTOPPABLE FAMILY each day has it’s own mind!!   Now don’t get me wrong, we are very consistant in what we do for business 5 hours a day…but the hours surrounding the work day get rather interesting.

Consistant Daily Activities:

• Wake up and put on Business Suite (Bathing Suit)
• Breaky by 10am (omlette’s, baked beans & fruit)
• Jump in the pool for a swim
• Say Bula 30-40 times in a day
• Hanalei plays at kids club
• Income Producing Activities

In-Consistant Daily Activities:

• Frog Racing every Monday night
• Hula show’s
• Horse rides on the beach
• Glass of wine at 12…because we can.
• Rugby matches with our sponsored team
• Kava nightb
• Bounty nights
• Swano DJ’s at our Resort night Club
• Dance Parties under the moon
• Hanalei dances with the local village

We can’t make this stuff up!!  We have realized that we “ARE LIVING” and enjoying every second that life presents to us.  I have finally accepted that we are NOT normal!!!!  The UNSTOPPABLE FAMILY lives…we truly live, and we are so grateful for it!
